Saturday’s tragic death of Glee star Cory Monteith hit his fans like a punch to the gut.

I can only imagine what’s it’s like to lose a young family member or close friend to an overdose.

Glee co-star Jane Lynch was on the Tonight Show Wednesday and she struggled to convey the impact of the loss as a friend and colleague.

Isolated vocal track from Grapevine will make your ears tingle

Speaking of musical acts that make you want to stab yourself in the eardrums with a blunt HB pencil, have you noticed how many performers are relying on backing tracks and auto-tune in concert these days?

I’m a major fan of artists who can blaze your stereo-cilia with non-enhanced live vocals. I’m OK if they stray from the album versions of songs to put me in the moment, to share that intangible magic of spontaneous nuance that comes with a truly live performance.

Want a dramatic illustration? Here’s Marvin Gaye‘s ripping vocal on Heard it Through the Grapevine, isolated in the mix so you can focus on his voice.

The hairs on the back of your neck will nudge each other as they stand, and say “whoa, can you believe that?”
